In our final match of the GSA-Smart Casual Event Tournament as part of our pre-season schedule, we played against Unics Kazan and won the match 75-68, finishing the tournament in the first place. We were leading 33-27 at the halftime of the match, played at Gloria Sports Arena.
We had the same starting five as our match against Beşiktaş Sompo Japan with Granger, Cedi, Cotton, Brown and Dunston, and our first points were scored by Cedi, assisted by Cotton. The first five minutes of the first quarter was in balance. Initiated by Granger’s shot which made it 8-7, our 7-0 scoring run helped us stay ahead 20-15 at the end of the quarter. As both teams increased pressure in defense, the second quarter was intense in terms of contention, yet weak in scoring. We managed to maintain our first-quarter lead during this quarter as well, leaving behind the first half up 33-27. Our highest scorer in the first half was Jayson Granger with 8 points.
Our starting five for the second half of the match were Doğuş, Cotton, Honeycutt, Brown and Dunston. Thanks to Dunston’s strong presence and points in the paint, we were leading 43-36 with four minutes into the quarter. Due to the opponent’s three-point shots after this moment, the margin went down and we lost the lead. We were trailing 49-53 with 1 minute left to play in the quarter. After successfully defending the opponent’s last possession and getting a buzzer-beating three-point field goal with Cedi, we were 1 point behind while heading into the final quarter: 52-53.
Just like we did at the end of the third quarter, we got into the final quarter with a three-point field goal. This time, it was by Furkan Korkmaz. With an increased intensity on defense similar to the second quarter and with a strong offense led by Cedi, Thomas and Granger, we did not allow our opponent to catch up, and won the game 75-68. With this result, we finished the GSA-Smart Casual Event Tournament in the top spot.
