We took down Olympiacos to win the Crete Tournament: 86-79

Participating in the pre-season Crete International Basketball Tournament, Efes defeated the Greek side Olympiacos 86-79 in the final match, and finished the tournament on top. Anadolu Efes was ahead 50-33 at the halftime of the match, played at Heraklion Arena.

Making a very rapid start into the game, Anadolu Efes took the lead 8-1 in the first three minutes with Granger and Cotton’s points. Leading 12-5 past the fifth minute, Efes continued to score with Honeycutt, Brown, Omic and Dunston, ahead 24-18 past the first 10 minutes of the game. Starting the second quarter with Honeycutt’s field goal, Efes got points by Thomas, ahead 31-18 at 11.30. With the margin up to 15 points with Honeycutt’s slam dunk, Thomas scored another field goal to make it 35-18 at 13.20, forcing Olympiacos’s coach to call a timeout. Getting consecutive points with Heurtel following the timeout, Efes was leading 41-24 past the 16th minute. Getting points by Cedi, Brown and Thomas followed by a slam dunk by Furkan in the remaining four minutes, Anadolu Efes was ahead 50-33 while heading into the locker room for the halftime.

With Dunston hitting our first field goal in the second half, Granger hit two free throws to help keep the lead 54-39 in the 22nd minute. When the opponent cut the margin down to nine points with the score 54-45 in the 23rd minute, Perasovic called a timeout. We were leading 61-47 into the 25th minute with Brown and Cotton’s points following the timeout. Converting a gorgeous assist by Heurtel, Brown increased the lead to 15 points in the 26th minute: 63-48. As Heurtel scored a three-pointer to make it 66-48 in the 27th minute, Anadolu Efes got two points by Heurtel and three points each by Honeycutt and Thomas, leading 74-58 while heading into the final quarter. With the score 65-74 in the first 2.30 minutes of the final quarter, Cedi scored our first field goal in this part of the game at 33.20: 76-65. As the score was 76-69 in the 34th minute, Perasovic called a timeout. Following two accurate free throws by Brown after the timeout, we were ahead 78-69 into the final five minutes of the match. Getting one more field goal with Heurtel from the left corner, Efes increased the lead to 11 points with 4.20 minutes left to play: 80-69. After Heurtel scored our 82nd point, Brown made an exceptional block, followed by Granger’s two points from the free throw line, increasing the lead back to 15 points with 2.50 minutes left: 84-69. With two three-pointers by the opponent followed by Brown’s slam dunk, the score was 86-75 within the final 1.40. Keeping ahead in the remaining time, Anadolu Efes won the game 86-79, and finished Crete International Basketball Tournament in the first spot.
